Embracing overwhelm: The power of doing nothing

In a world that often feels like it’s moving at breakneck speed, many of us find ourselves grappling with feelings of overwhelm. The constant demands of work, family, and social obligations can create a sense of chaos that feels impossible to escape. As a psychotherapist, I want to share a different perspective on about these feelings—one that embraces stillness rather than action.

And by stillness I mean, doing nothing.

Overwhelm can show up in various ways: anxiety, fatigue, irritability, and even physical discomfort. It’s a signal that your mind and body are reaching their limits. In your attempt to manage these feelings, do you turn to strategies and solutions? And do these work?

Sometimes these can feel like just another set of tasks to add to your already full plate.

What if, instead of trying to fix the overwhelm, you let yourself simply be? Embracing stillness can be a radical act of self-care. It’s about giving yourself permission to pause, to stop what you can stop, and to exist in a state of rest—like a vegetable. This doesn’t mean ignoring your responsibilities or shutting down completely. It’s more about recognizing that sometimes, the best thing you can do is to take a step back.

In moments of overwhelm, consider letting yourself do nothing. This could mean sitting quietly, lying down, or simply being present in your surroundings without the pressure to act. It could mean listening to music, or binge-watching your favourite TV program. For a while.

It’s an opportunity to reconnect with yourself, to breathe, and to let go of the constant push to be productive.

In our fast-paced culture, there’s often an unspoken expectation to always be “on” and to keep moving forward. However, doing nothing challenges this notion. It’s okay to let go of the need to achieve or accomplish anything in these moments. Letting yourself be unproductive can be liberating and can create space for clarity and calm.

When you give yourself permission to rest, you often find that your mind begins to clear. In this state, you might gain insights or simply feel a sense of relief from the weight of your responsibilities.

It’s a reminder that you are a human being, not a human doing, and that your worth is not solely tied to your productivity.

Feeling overwhelmed is a common experience, but it doesn’t have to dictate how you live. By doing nothing and letting yourself  simply be, you can create a sanctuary amidst the chaos. So, the next time you feel the weight of overwhelm pressing down, consider taking a moment to stop, breathe, and exist without expectation.

In a world that often demands more, remember that it’s perfectly okay to do less. Give yourself the gift of simply being. You might just find that in those quiet moments, you can reconnect with yourself and discover a sense of peace that has been waiting for you all along.
